Welcome to Colombo! Our representative will greet you at Bandaranaike International Airport and take you to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s historic hill capital and its second largest city, which has UNESCO World Heritage status. Along the way, we will visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and a spice garden. See the dedication of those who care for orphaned elephants.
In Kandy, explore the city and its rich Buddhist heritage. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic houses a revered relic dating back to the 4th century, when the Buddha’s tooth was brought to Sri Lanka hidden in the hair of an Orissan princess. This relic has gained prestige and sanctity in Sri Lanka and throughout the Buddhist world. Immerse yourself in culture and history as you begin your Sri Lankan adventure.
After breakfast, head to Nuwara Eliya. Visit the Ramboda Falls, the 11th tallest waterfall in Sri Lanka, which plunges from a height of 109 meters. Explore a tea factory and plantation. Visit the Sri Bhakta Hanuman Temple, associated with the epic Ramayana, which houses a 16-foot-high Hanuman statue. Later, in Nuwara Eliya, often called ‘Little England,’ enjoy a city walk amid beautiful mountains, valleys and tea plantations. Visit the Sita Amman Temple, which marks the spot where King Ravana held Sita captive. This charming city, which resembles England, gives a glimpse of colonial influence. Nuwara Eliya’s cool weather and beautiful landscape make for a charming experience.
After breakfast, head to Bentota and visit the famous Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society of Sri Lanka. Established in 1988, it has preserved and released about 3.5 million baby turtles into the wild, with local fishermen assisting by providing the eggs. The eggs are buried in the sand, and the babies are released into the sea at night after about 50 days. The hatchery cares for injured and disabled turtles, including albinos. Next, take a boat ride on the Madu Ganga River, which is home to pristine mangrove forests and abundant wildlife. You’ll encounter diverse flora and fauna. Visit a Buddhist monastery on an island, and see local activities like cinnamon production and lobster fishing
Head to Colombo, which is a two-hour trip. Explore the city starting at Fort, the former British administrative and military center. Pass through Cinnamon Gardens, a tree-lined residential area. Discover the bustling business district of Pettah, which includes Sea Street, famous for goldsmiths, a Hindu temple, and the 1749 Dutch Church of Wolfendahl. Visit BMICH and Independence Square, which houses a replica of the Avukana Buddha. Then, enjoy shopping at Odel, which offers designer clothing and culinary adventures for the family. In Colombo, you’ll experience a mix of history, culture, and modern shopping opportunities during this day of exploration.
After breakfast, head to the airport for your return flight. We hope you had a wonderful holiday and we will see you again soon.
